Trauma, PTSD, and EMDR

Trauma, PTSD, and EMDR

You’re Not Broken — You’re Carrying Something Heavy

Therapy for Trauma, PTSD, and Adverse Childhood Experiences

Some wounds are invisible — but they change everything.

Maybe you’ve been through something no one should ever have to go through. Or maybe it wasn’t “one big thing” — just a long stretch of surviving, bracing, and holding it all in. Now, you find yourself constantly on edge, emotionally shut down, or triggered by things that don’t make sense.

It’s exhausting. And it’s not your fault.

At Maple Grove Counselling, I help people heal from trauma, PTSD, and overwhelming life experiences with compassion, science, and a deep respect for your story.

Trauma Isn’t Just What Happened — It’s What Lives On Inside Us

You don’t have to call it “trauma” for it to be valid. If your nervous system still feels like it’s stuck in the past — if your body reacts before your mind can — it means something is asking to be healed. We call it past coming into present, or another term some like is "big 'T' or small 't' traumas"

We work with:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Childhood abuse or neglect

  • Sexual trauma or assault

  • Medical trauma

  • Car accidents or natural disasters

  • Spiritual trauma or emotional abuse

  • Grief from sudden or traumatic loss

  • First responder and frontline worker stress

  • Immigration trauma or displacement

Whether your trauma was recent or decades ago, whether it’s something you can name or something you just feel, therapy can help you make sense of what happened — and start to reclaim your life from it. You deserve to be able to live how you want.

Common Signs of Unresolved Trauma

Trauma isn’t always loud. It often hides in symptoms we dismiss or misunderstand. You might be living with trauma or PTSD if:

  • You feel emotionally numb, disconnected, or like you're just going through the motions

  • You’re easily startled, hyper-vigilant, or constantly on edge

  • You avoid certain people, places, or memories

  • You struggle with sleep, flashbacks, or nightmares

  • You feel guilt or shame that doesn’t make logical sense

  • You find yourself shutting down, spacing out, or losing time

  • Your body feels tight, heavy, or unsafe for no clear reason

  • You’re stuck in a cycle of reacting, regretting, and withdrawing

These are not character flaws — they are the echoes of survival. And they are treatable.

You Don’t Have to Relive It to Heal It

Gentle, Effective Trauma Therapy That Works

At Maple Grove Counselling, I use trauma-informed, therapy to help you process what happened without re-traumatizing you. We will move at your pace, and do so with caution and prudence. You are always in control.

My trauma therapy tools include:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): A powerful, research-backed method that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional charge.

  • Prolonged Exposure (PE): A useful and reliable mode of empirically validated therapy. It is primarily used for and useful for specific event traumas, geared toward processing specific events/memories.

  • Attachment-Focused Therapy: To heal the wounds left by relational trauma, neglect, or abandonment.

  • Grounding Tools: To help with emotional regulation and distress tolerance. Expanding our window of tolerance so that we are able to face more, weather bigger storms, and come back to baseline more quickly.

You don’t have to explain everything in detail. You don’t even need to know where to begin. We start right where you are.

What Healing Can Look Like

Healing from trauma is not about “getting over it.” It’s about moving through it — so it no longer defines or controls you. Honestly, most people I have done this with tell me in some way it sucks. It does, it is not easy. However, I am also quite often told on the other side of treatment that it is some version of the word Transformative. With the right support, it’s possible to:

  • Feel safe in your own body again

  • Sleep peacefully without nightmares

  • Respond to life instead of reacting from old wounds

  • Stop blaming yourself for what wasn’t your fault

  • Reconnect with joy, creativity, and love

  • Finally feel free

It’s not easy. But it’s worth it. And you don’t have to do it alone.

You Are Not What Happened to You

But You Can Heal From It

The past may be part of your story, but it doesn’t have to define your future. Therapy can be the space where you finally breathe, speak your truth, and start living with a sense of safety again — maybe for the first time.

You’re not weak for needing help. You’re human. And you’re worthy of care.
